Birdhouse Project
How do we save an endangered species?
Role: Conservationist & Architect/Designer Term: Spring/Summer 2016 No. Teachers: 2 No. Students: 78 Situation Over the past couple of years, we have slowly been developing a garden/allotment area at the back of our school. We were keen to start focusing more on wildlife rather than just plants so this project collaboration with Science seemed like a good opportunity to study habitats and attract animals/birds. Initially, we ran this project with one half of the year group and collaborated with Hawkins-Brown, the architectural firm, who came in and presented how they would approach the brief. They also gave a couple of workshops of cladding techniques. In the second term, we developed the project and limited the surface design stage so that students could focus more on refining their woodworking skills. Brief To design a birdhouse for our school garden that attracts birds that are at risk in the London area. You will design a birdhouse that meets the specification of one of the following birds: a house sparrow, common starling or swift. You will need to be knowledgeable about the ecological requirements of these birds and confident to explain how and why you have designed your birdhouse accordingly.
