Does Stratford meet the needs of teenagers?
Term: Spring 2017 No. Students: 17 Year: 10 Situation This project was a collaboration between School 21 and Publicworks, an art and architecture practice that focuses on civic education and activism through art and design. A group of 17 year 10 students (4 boys, 13 girls) from School 21 in Newham, East London, worked on a 12-week project in the spring term 2017. The aim of the project was for students to engage with their local built environment and identify areas of neglect that they want to change to cater for their own age group's interests. The outcomes of the project were displayed at the Tate Modern during a Publicworks symposium focused on civic education and, pending funding, some may even be built. Brief To identify a neglected or disused space (SLOAP - Space Left Over After Planning) within ten minutes of School 21 and propose a change in the way that it is used. You will come up with plans, drawings and a model of a mobile structure that will be presented at the Tate Modern as part of a symposium about civic education and architecture in April 2017. Outcomes
Learning Objectives In GCSE Art 7 Design, students are expected to show evidence of the following assessment objectives: AO1: Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources AO2: Refine work by exploring ideas, selecting and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and demonstrates understanding of visual language Reflection This project arose out of a conversation with Torange Khodsari, one of the Directors of Publicworks, who was explaining how her organisation often transforms public spaces in consultation with the local community to raise issues of historical, cultural or even commercial interest. We discussed how teenagers were rarely consulted on how they would like to transform their local area and so set about developing a brief that allowed them to explore their local environment.
